If you've created an EBS Volume on the Amazon cloud and do not see any instances to assign your volume to when you try to attach the instance, it is more than likely due to the fact that both your instance and the new EBS volume are in different zones.
To resolve this problem go to the AWS Management Console and click on the instance you wish to attach the additional storage to. Take a look at the Zone in the details panel and take note of the value, "us-east-1d" for example.
Go back to the EBS Volume view and see if the volume zone is identical to the zone of your instance. If you don't see the zone, click on the volume and look at the detail panel at the bottom of your display or click on the Hide/Show button and make sure there is a check mark next to the "Zone" item and it will be displayed in the volume table.
If your EBS volume is not in the same zone you will need to create a new volume and select the same zone as your instance when prompted.
Once the instance and volume are in the same zones, the volume can be assigned to the instance and then used as additional storage from within your instance.
